Sector
What is a Sector?
The Beginnings
Overland Missions began by leading short-term expeditions into remote areas of sub-Saharan Africa. As the vision and the team grew, discussions began as to what it would look like to plant a person or a family in a specified area, or a “sector.” There they would do not just the work of an evangelist, but stay for a predetermined amount of time to disciple the people, with the ultimate goal of the indigenous people carrying on that ministry themselves.

The Goal
Sector has always been about disciples creating disciples. By learning the language, planting themselves for years within a people group, and believing in the new creation reality of every person, sector missionaries are able to create a viral move of God in their area. Whether in rural Africa where we have selected a province, on the Amazon River in Brazil where we located established communities along the river, or in SE Asia and MENA where we found a specific people group that we focus on reaching, we have always been committed to doing whatever it takes to bring the Gospel to the most neglected and unreached part of the world.
How do sectors work?
How We Establish Sectors
Before we ever put roots down long-term in a country or a new region, we send in what we call a “recon,” which is an extremely vital first step. We know that the open door into any new nation that Overland is desiring to begin a long-term work in is always a relationship. Time and time again we have found the greatest success is not through a deep knowledge of culture, history, or logistics, but through the people who are hungry for a move of God in their nation. A recon is the first step is to find those individuals whom we can build lasting relationships with. After a recon we are able to make a more definitive plan to launch into the area. This includes a launch team, visas, housing, fundraising, and so many other ever-changing logistics that are required when you establish yourself long-term.

What Does a Sector Missionary Do?
Our sector missionaries experience incredible diversity in their daily lives. While the overarching goal is always the same, the way that each of our individual people and teams achieve the goal depends on the country, culture, and the instruction of the Holy Spirit. Within Overland we do have individual ministries with different expressions in different nations, some of those ministries include Water Projects, Chief Chaplaincy, Kids on Fire, etc… These ministries are not in every country that we work in, but are now regularly being introduced to more countries as our resources and teams are expanding. Scroll through the different pages below to check out some of the incredible opportunities we have had through our different ministry expressions across the world.
The Strategy of Sector
Pioneering
Overland Missions exists to advance the mandate of the early church — to pioneer territories around the Globe and preach the Gospel to every person we come across. This phase of our ministry encompasses the initial deployment of “boots on the ground” for the purpose of learning new territories and the people that dwell in them. During the pioneering stage, we are determining the spiritual needs of various people groups, potential for launching a mission base, developing relationships with key government, traditional and clergy leaders as well as identifying the regions that seem primed for a move of God. We are a team of pioneers. It’s in our DNA.

Evangelism
We are intentionally focused on the spiritual investment of every tribe, tongue and nation. Our Expedition Department is the spearhead of our evangelistic efforts worldwide as we engage communities through home-to-home and street evangelism. Short-term teams from churches around the world are recruited and deployed to serve alongside our highly trained missionaries in order to reach the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This work is then passed on to our long-term sector missionaries who facilitate evangelistic outreaches along with a multitude of discipleship opportunities providing the platform for lives to be changed by the preaching of the Word in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Discipleship
As our missionaries dedicate themselves to powerful evangelistic strategies, we recognize that our work has only just begun. Every new believer is given the opportunity to develop their faith and understanding of the Word of God through ongoing revival meetings, kids ministry, and Bible School (OMT). Our mission is to raise up mighty men and women of God in every community who will one day lead their people in word, character and power. The focus of our discipleship is to develop these potential leaders into powerful visionaries and preachers who will reach their communities and one day be launched as missionaries into other lands. Our Transformational Development Initiatives seek to provide our local leaders with financial opportunities that could one day fund that movement.
