How It Began

Worship has always been at the very heart of Overland Missions. From the earliest days, when Phil and Sharon traveled the nations with a Bible and a guitar, the worship of Jesus has been central to every gathering, whether on an Amazon boat, under an African tree, in a stilted home in Asia, or at the beginning of our working day at Rapid 14 in Zambia.

But in 2018, when a group of Overland missionaries who were also musicians gathered for a simple night of worship, something new took place. By the end of the night, an anthem had emerged that expressed our shared calling - to follow Jesus wherever He leads and to give our lives for the sake of the Gospel. That song, “Where You Go”, captured the heart of the mission with the declaration: “No matter what it takes, no matter what it costs, You are worth it all.” It became a meaningful expression of worship for our Overland team and marked the beginning of what was to come.

Then, in April 2021, God gave a clearer vision: this expression was not meant to be a single song, but a sustained movement of worship and songwriting flowing from the nations. A small group of missionaries committed to writing together weekly on Rapid 14 in Zambia, believing that faithfulness in the process would allow God to birth something new. As songs began to take shape, they were recorded and shared, and momentum slowly grew. Over time, more missionaries and local believers joined in, leading to songwriting retreats, global collaborations, and writing teams meeting consistently in different parts of the world. In some places, this meant helping new believers write the very first worship songs ever written in their language. What began with a handful of writers became a multiplying movement, empowering worship to rise from the nations as people encounter Jesus and respond through song.

What you hear in the recordings today are songs that are being sung wherever you find an Overland missionary, an Overland missionary base, or somewhere in the world where Jesus has left a mark through a person’s obedience to the Great Commission. We hope you will enjoy it and join us in exalting the Great King of all the people of the earth.
